My wife Diana and I planted in 1966, and the original 1967 vintage was our first taste of Barbaresco Pinot Noir from the region. Today, the valley is one of the great Pinot Noir zones in the world and this release proves that our instincts are right about the regions. It’s 51 years later, but this wine, made by my son Jason Lett, is as good as ever. This is the first of a series of wines to be launched in the 1970s, with the history and quality of the wine at the heart of the story.
The 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, made from Napa and Sonoma grapes, was also awarded – winemaker Mike Grgich. The Montelena Chardonnay is made from the graceful 2015 vintage (# 58), which is a good example of this. The 1961 vintage may be the best vintage of the century, and it is only 20 years old, and has given us an insight into what promises to be a great year for Chateau Chardin Blanc in the future.

Perhaps the most impressive are the 1979-1980 Rotburgundy wines, selected from the New York State Wine Board’s list of the best reds of 1980. There are 3 wines rated “excellent” and the other 14 “very good.” Outstanding wines are: a red wine from France, a white wine from Italy and two red wines from Germany.
I also drank a lot of old wines from Leroy’s at home and was amazed at the variety of wines I was offered to try. The wines I had were really nice, which turned out to be a drop in the ocean compared to the huge inventory in Leroys’ cellar.
